Lorde has written an emotional letter to fans, calling herself a “newborn adult” on her 20th birthday. The “Royals” singer, who burst onto the scene with her debut album, Pure Heroine, which chronicled the pitfalls of fame and served as an instant album for rebellion against celebrity materialism.
Lorde has remained relatively quiet in the industry since then, aside from a collaboration with Disclosure last year, and has not been overly open about when a follow-up album will be released. In the letter, the singer describes her forthcoming album as a chronicle of moving to New York and the heartbreak that can come with it.
“I wrote a record about it, all of it, so much more than what I’ve written down here, and I’m in new york getting it done,” she wrote in the letter. “this record - well, this one is about what comes next.”
She further posted to Facebook, “The big day is not tomorrow, or even next month realistically, but soon. I know you understand. The party is about to start. I am about to show you the new world.”
Bestie Taylor Swift also threw Lorde a lavish birthday party last night to celebrate at Carbone restaurant in New York City’s Soho neighborhood. Several photos from the event were posted to Lorde and Swift’s Instagram accounts. The gathering also included celebrity friends Lena Dunham, Aziz Ansari, Karlie Kloss, Mae Whitman and Rachel Antonoff.
