The Tupac Shakur biopic, All Eyez on Me, now has an official release date, which was revealed on Instagram yesterday. The lead actor, Demetrius Shipp Jr., posted a clip filmed during his birthday party that unveiled that the movie will hit theaters on June 16, 2017.
A representative for the film also confirmed this news to Billboard and the release date of the movie would have been the rapper’s 46th birthday.
All Eyez on Me was directed by Benny Boom, who has served as a music video director in the past. The biopic documents Shakur’s catastrophic rise to fame as a West Coast based rapper in the ‘90s. All Eyez on Me will also deal with his relationships with label Death Row Records, East Coast competition Biggie Smalls and his death in 1996.
Jamal Woolward, who played Smalls in the biopic Notorious, released in 2009, will be returning to play the rapper in All Eyez on Me. Dominic L. Santana will also be returning to play Suge Knight. Danai Gurira, who is an actress on The Walking Dead, will play Shakur's mother Afeni, who had been an executive producer on the film until she died at the age of 69 this past May.
XXL reports that the film had been on hold in July over a song dispute, but the issue has since been resolved.
