Gwen Stefani performed a song from her Christmas album You Make It Feel Like Christmas on Tuesday's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The singer sang her own version of Wham's classic "Last Christmas."
Stefani skipped the synths from the 1986 pop Christmas song for her performance on the show. Instead, she brought her band with her and treated the audience to a soulful rendition of "Last Christmas," thanks to the accompaniment of the violin, cello, drums, guitar, and a couple of backup singers. Her trademark melancholic voice adds a different feel to the song.
The former "No Doubt" singer herself is an ethereal beauty in her blush and shimmering gown. The 48-year-old Stefani looks like an angel performing on stage against the backdrop of faux snowflakes and surrounded by Christmas lights and decors.
"Such a different interpretation. She make[s] this song imprinted with her personality," one fan wrote on the show's YouTube page, while another commented, "Lovely performance of a Christmas classic; Gwen did a marvelous job covering the other holiday classics featured on her album, as well."
Stefani took to her Twitter account ahead of her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The artist shared a photo from her performance on stage.
Stefani has been doing promotional rounds for her new Christmas album You Make It Feel Like Christmas. One of her stops was at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in November. She recorded her performance of "Last Christmas" in the same month, but it only aired on Tuesday's episode. Another performance from the same visit aired before Thanksgiving.
In a previous interview, Stefani told Fallon that it has always been her dream to do a Christmas album. She admitted that she wants to be a part of people's yuletide celebration.
"To write and be part of [fans'] holidays ... musically, that would be my dream. It kind of sounds like a No Doubt record in a way," she said.
Aside from "Last Christmas," Stefani also recorded her own take on some of the notable classic yuletide songs for You Make It Feel Like Christmas. These include "Santa Baby," "My Gift Is You," "Let it Snow," "Under the Christmas Lights," " Silent Night," and "Jingle Bells."
Stefani collaborated with boyfriend Blake Shelton, Justin Tranter, and Michael Busbee for her album. You Make It Feel Like Christmas, under Interscope Records, is available now for purchase.
