Pitch Perfect 3 would have been a different story if not for Anna Kendrick. The actress recently revealed that she declined a love story for her character, Beca, because it was problematic.
The original plan was for Beca to have a romantic storyline with a music executive named Theo played by Guy Burnet. He was supposed to be her love interest. Beca already has a working relationship with Theo. However, Kendrick shot down the idea because it would have been problematic.
"Originally the music executive was supposed by my romantic interest but I said no to that, because I thought that would be kind of f*cking problematic. I was like, 'Can no one else [see it]? Once I said it, everybody was like, 'I guess so,'" Kendrick revealed in an interview about Pitch Perfect 3.
The higher-ups eventually went along with her refusal. However, they had other plans in mind. They still wanted to play around with the romantic storyline for Beca and Theo. They wanted to sneak in a little love scene for the pair in Pitch Perfect 3. Of course, Kendrick once again declined.
"And they still wanted to have a version at the end when we kissed, and I still said no," Kendrick added in her interview.
This is not the first time that Kendrick refused to follow some of the higher-ups' suggestions for Pitch Perfect 3. There was an initial request for the costumes of the Bellas to be more sexy and revealing. People from the top wanted the costumes to show more skin and for them to be "tighter and sexier."
Then again, Kendrick laughed off the suggestion instead. She reasoned that the viewers are not after the characters' costumes or after their looks. Kendrick said that people do not come to see the movie because of the girls' sex appeal.
She relished the fact that people watch the film not because of how the Bellas look. Instead, they are interested in seeing the movie because of its diverse characters. The actress added that "audiences are interested in seeing a movie of misfits and girls of different shapes and sizes."
Pitch Perfect 3 opens in U.S. theaters on Dec. 22. The film sees the return of the original casts and Pitch Perfect 2 newcomer Hailee Steinfeld. The film also stars Ruby Rose, DJ Khaled as himself, Matt Lanter, and Andy Allo. The film is the last installment in the trilogy.
