Grumpy Cat Owner Wins Copyright Lawsuit, Gets Awarded With $710,000 Payout

Grumpy Cat is certainly not having it and authorities are well aware of it. A California court sided with it in a copyright case, granting the feline a whopping $710,000.

The case stemmed from the unauthorized use of Grumpy Cat's face in another Grenade's coffee product. It was in 2013 when the company sealed a deal of $150,000 with Grumpy Cat Limited, the company created by Tabatha Bundesen, owner of the cat.

Grenade received the right to use the cat's face in their "Grumpy Cat Grumpuccino" products. However, in 2015, Grenade released another set of beverage inspired by the cat called the "Grumpy Cat Roasted Coffee," which breached the contract.

Aside from this, Grumpy Cat Limited claimed that the coffee company violated its contract when it sold Grumpy Cat merchandise like t-shirts. It asserted that Grenade had not been paying what was rightfully and supposedly its part of the sales of the beverage from the Grumpy Cat line.

Grenade, meanwhile, maintained that Grumpy Cat Limited was not faithful to the contract either. It filed for a countersuit, stressing that the latter had only made 17 posts about their beverage on social media and the promised appearance of the cat in a movie did not transpire.

However, the court ruled out in favor of the feline.

"Grumpy Cat feels vindicated and feels the jury reached a just verdict," the lawyer for Grumpy Cat Limited stated.

The victory is not enough to make Grumpy Cat happy, though, who appeared in one of the hearings. The infamous cat, with a real name Tardar Sauce, also became the face of memes through the years because of her expression.

Her noticeable default frown, no matter how one pets or kisses her, remains to be her expression mainly because of overbite or when one's upper and lower teeth are not aligned. Grumpy Cat has been catapulted to popularity and fame after the sibling of Bundesen uploaded a photo of the unhappy cat on Reddit.

The photo spread like wildfire and Grumpy Cat has since been circulating the internet. Apart from being the center of fun and wit, her face is also seen in mugs, pens, and pillows, to name a few.

She also made several guesting stints. The seemingly bad-tempered cat showcased herself in Good Morning America, Today, and to American Idol.

Grumpy Cat has also "written" a book and headlined a cereal commercial. In 2014, Grumpy Cat had also top-billed a movie Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas.
