5 Seconds of Summer is officially back from a two-year hiatus. The Australian pop rock band has released a new single called "Want You Back."
The band's song debuted on Thursday night, Feb. 22, on Spotify and this is their first new music in two years.
5SOS has been teasing their return since last month, with a new art and a new song release date. The track was supposed to drop on a Friday, but since everyone was hyped up for the comeback of Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin, and Michael Clifford into the scene, the song was released earlier than planned.
The band's official social media pages also released a behind-the-scenes photo of the boys in a studio.
Because of the track, 5SOS returns to Billboard's Social 50 chart. The band currently sits at the number 24 spot, with K-pop group BTS leading the pack at number 1.
The Meaning Behind 'Want You Back'
To talk about their new music, members of 5SOS agreed to an interview with Radio. Hemmings explained the meaning behind the song, "Want You Back."
"It's about wanting someone back," the 21-year-old said. "Or not even someone, even like the feeling of losing something and wanting it back, so it doesn't necessarily have to be about a particular person. It can be about a feeling you are trying to chase."
Meanwhile, Hood shared that the track is the last one they wrote for their upcoming album. He said that the band has written and developed their upcoming album for a year and a half. Needless to say, the upcoming album will be worth the wait.
However, despite the anticipation around the boy band's return to the spotlight, Clifford said that they feel nervous releasing what they have been working on for the past two years to the loyal fanbase.
"I think we were so nervous, and I think we still are really nervous about the rest of the record," he explained. "We've lived with the songs for two years, but I think that's what's making us so driven to make sure it's the best it can be."
He added that the two-year hiatus gave them a renewed energy to make new music and perform.
"This era of 5 Seconds of Summer feels like the first era to us, which is amazing," Irwin stated.
The group's most recent album release Sound Good Feels Good came out in 2015. It topped the Billboard 200 albums chart that same year.
Details of the upcoming album are scarce, but the group has already announced that they are going on tour this year. The upcoming 5 Seconds of Summer tour will kick off on March 20 in Stockholm, Sweden. The band will also perform in several major cities in Europe and North America including New York, Toronto, Nashville, Chicago, and more.
Tickets will go on sale on Friday, March 2.
