More of rapper Jay-Z's intimate interview with talk show host David Letterman has been released. This time, he talked about his mother.
A Son's Pride
In a preview clip for the upcoming interview with the former Late Show with David Letterman host, Jay-Z shared one of his most important personal stories. According to Rolling Stone, the rap mogul revealed his reaction to the exact moment when his beloved mother, Gloria Carter, came out to him as a lesbian.
The "Empire State of Mind" rapper revealed that he got quite emotional when he explained that his mother had to protect her kids by hiding her authentic self. Jay-Z admitted that he cried when he had a heart-to-heart with his mother, who also told him that she "loved someone."
He also told Letterman that he learned about his mother's sexuality eight months ago. During that time, Jay-Z was in the middle of recording his 13th studio album, 4:44. Parts of the emotional conversation between Mrs. Carter and her son are highlighted on the song "Smile." He recorded the track a day after the emotional discussion.
"But this was the first time we had the conversation. And the first time I heard her say she loved her partner. Like, 'I feel like I love somebody.' She said, 'I feel like.' She held that little bit back, still. She didn't say 'I'm in love,' she said, 'I feel like I love someone,'" said Jay-Z in a conversation transcribed by Entertainment Weekly.
Rapper's Delight
Before the emotional reveal, Netflix previously released a clip of Jay-Z's conversation with Letterman on the television icon's new series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman. In this segment, Jay-Z revealed his exact thoughts on two of the rap music industry's most prominent icons. The "99 Problems" rapper revealed that he admires Snoop Dogg's voice and the fact that he can create superb beats. Jay-Z added that he is also impressed with Eminem's being incredibly good at his craft.
M.I.A.'s Big Reveal
The clip comes days after M.I.A., one of the rapper's former protégés, revealed that she was forced to sign a 'ridiculous' settlement following the 2012 Super Bowl Halftime Show controversy where she flipped her middle finger on camera when she performed with Madonna and Nicki Minaj. The National Football League was furious with her behavior and slapped her with a $16.5 million claim for tarnishing the organization's "goodwill and reputation." Jay-Z encouraged her to sign the claim, but it would leave her without earnings for the rest of her life.
Jay-Z On Infidelity
When Jay-Z went on The Van Jones Show, the rapper revealed his thoughts regarding infidelity. He told the journalist that he believed the best apology to infidelity is a changed behavior. He also said that it was essential to listen to one's partner and have the courage to hear criticism and sadness. His comments come after the long-persistent rumors that he cheated on his megastar wife, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
