Dr. Dre is reportedly in the early stages of the production of an upcoming movie about the life and career of late singer-songwriter Marvin Gaye.
According to reports, the rapper/record producer has already secured the rights to turn the life story into a big screen feature.
Dr. Dre Working On Marvin Gaye Movie
Not much information is available about the project, but many have already tried and failed to bring the story of the artist into the screen. Cameron Crowe, James Gandolfini, F. Gary Gray, Scott Rudin, Jesse L. Martin, and Lenny Kravitz have all attempted to adapt the life and career of Gaye into the big screen in the past.
However, the "What's Going On" singer's family have always refused the authorization of the project, until now, as reported by Variety.
The 53-year-old is not a newcomer when it comes to making movies. He previously produced Straight Outta Compton, a critically acclaimed 2015 movie nominated at the Academy Awards. He is also doing behind-the-scenes work for an upcoming documentary Compton's Finest, which is set for release sometime in 2019.
Sources claim that Dr. Dre has also obtained the rights to the singer's catalog, which is licensed by Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Some of Gaye's most popular songs include "Sexual Healing," "Let's Get It On," "That's The Way Love Is," "Distant Lover," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)."
It was not disclosed how he won the rights to the still-untitled biopic. No actor, director, or release date is currently attached to the project.
Jamie Foxx's Marvin Gaye Television Series
In 2016, Gaye's estate also authorized Jamie Foxx to develop a television series based on the life and career of the renowned singer-songwriter. It was the first time that members of the family agreed to a project surrounding the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.
"This project will be a powerful and definitive telling of Marvin Gaye's life story," said Marvin Gaye III at the time.
However, for undisclosed reasons, the television series did not push through.
Gaye broke into the music scene back in 1962 with his single "Stubborn Kind of Fellow." Since then, he has over 50 singles on the pop charts and collaborated with other big names such as Diana Ross. Because of his great contribution to the industry, he earned the title of "Prince of Motown."
The singer-songwriter was shot dead on April 1, 1984, by his father after a violent argument. He was 44 years old.
