The Global Citizen Concert 2018
According to reports, Mr. and Mrs. Carter have agreed to get some time off of their "On The Run II" world tour in order to join several other artists at the event that is set to take place in December.
The Global Citizen Concert takes place annually to encourage young people to get involved in its causes. This year, the organization has partnered with House of Mandela to celebrate Mandela: 100, the centenary year of the anti-apartheid hero.
Other performers at the concert include Ed Sheeran, Usher, Pharrell Williams, Eddie Vedder, and Chris Martin. South African musicians are also expected to perform at the event.
In addition, the Global Citizen has also invited Hollywood A-list stars to appear at the concert. Actress-television host Oprah Winfrey will reportedly deliver a keynote speech about the former president. Meanwhile, actor Forest Whitaker and model Naomi Campbell will host the event.
This is the first time that the concert, which was inaugurated in 2002, will be held in Africa.
" We're celebrating Mandela's 100th birthday this year, and so we wanted to throw a concert in South Africa to celebrate that and to focus on the goal of ending extreme poverty," said singer/songwriter John Legend who has been a longtime supporter o Global Citizen.
"We believe we can do it, and we've made a lot of progress. A lot of organizations over the years have been working toward this goal, and Global Citizen is mobilizing folks and mobilizing resources so that we can really focus on this goal of ending extreme poverty."
Music To End Poverty
A limited number of tickets will be sold beginning Wednesday, July 11, on the website of the Global Citizen. However, those who want to see the "Apes***" singers live in concert for free can earn passes by participating in Johannesburg's local communities and Global Citizen platforms starting Aug. 21.
The Global Citizen aims to end extreme poverty anywhere in the world in the next two decades. In the next six months, the organization will encourage world leaders to make commitments to end poverty. The organization also hopes to raise $1 billion in pledges to help the poorest families around the world.
The Global Citizen Concert will take place at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Dec. 2.
