Katy Perry Talks Experiencing ‘Situational Depression’ After Releasing ‘Witness’

Katy Perry suffers from situational depression after the release of her album Witness. The singer said that it was caused by the negative reactions to her record.

Witness was released last year, and it did not perform well compared to Perry's other albums. Following its release, Perry said she went to a personal growth retreat in California to recover.

During her recent interview, the American Idol judge said that she was so affected by people's negative comments because she took them to heart. As a result, she ended up hurting herself more.

"Music is my first love and I think it was the universe saying: 'Okay, you speak al of this language about self-love and authenticity, but we are going to put you through another test and take away any kind of validating 'blankie.' Then we'll see how much you truly love yourself," said Perry.

Katy Perry Shares Her Learnings

On the upside, Perry also learned a lot of things about herself following the release of Witness. She said that she now has a new material and soul foundation.

In related news, this is not the first time that the "Dark Horse" singer talked about her mental health. In June of last year, Perry admitted to having suicidal thoughts.

"I wrote a song about it. I feel ashamed that I would have those thoughts, feel that low and that depressed. You can be right or you can be loved. I just want to be loved," explained Perry.

Katy Perry Talks About Orlando Bloom Relationship

Perry may be receiving lots of love at the moment as she is in a relationship with Orlando Bloom. The couple made headlines in February after Bloom accompanied his girlfriend in meeting Pope Francis in Italy.

At the time, fans became more interested with Bloom and Perry's trip rather than with the singer meeting the Pope.

"I don't want it to be a headline of the story, because it takes away from the purpose. Also, it's extremely misogynistic. Of course, I love my relationship, but that is one part of me, and I don't want any part of what I do to be diminished," said Perry.

Fans of the Prism artist will get to see her on television again next year. Perry will return as a judge on American Idol season 2 on ABC. However, details about the new season are still kept under wraps.
