Detroit rapper and songwriter Obie Trice, formerly under Eminem's Shady Records, is sentenced to 90 days in jail for a December 2019 gun incident.

Local news outlet WDIV Local 4 reports that the former Shady Records artist was sentenced to Michigan's Oakland County Jail for 90 days for gun misdemeanor. The sentence is the latest episode of Obie Trice's legal battle. On December 6, 2019, there was an altercation at Trice's Commerce Township home between the rapper and his girlfriend. The scuffle resulted in an 18-year-old man, his girlfriend's son, being shot in the leg. The former Eminem affiliate was charged in February.

Last June, Trice pleaded guilty to possessing an unregistered gun. However, he was credited with an equivalent of five days served during the previous hearing on Wednesday, July 8.

Initially, Obie Trice was arrested on aggravated felony assault of a family member with a gun and contempt of court charges. The contempt charge was supposedly for the rapper's violation of an existing protective order. His felony charges were later reduced to misdemeanor possession of an unregistered firearm. The police later determined that the gun, which led to the injury, was accidentally discharged, although it has no license.

Upon the downgrading of his charges, the former Eminem artist took to Instagram. He posted a TMZ headline that read: "Rapper Obie Trice No Charge for Shooting GF's Son." The rapper responded in his caption. "Never would!!! Youngin was my love one fuck the news all we want is #FACTS #GOD #BLESSINGHEOK," Obie wrote.

From Shady Records to Black Market Entertainment

Unlike most hip-hop artists, Obie Trice III goes up on stage using his real name. He started his professional career with Eminem's Shady Records in 2000. He introduced himself through a freestyle skit on D12's 2001 album "Devil's Night." Obie delivered his signature line: "Obie Trice: real name, no gimmicks."

As a part of Eminem's record label, Trice also appeared in the 2002 semi-autobiographical film "8 Mile" as a rapper in the parking lot scene. He also performed and co-wrote songs on the film's official soundtrack. Trice appeared on "Love Me," "Adrenaline Rush," and "Rap Name."

He released his solo debut "Cheers" on September 23, 2003. Its carrier single, "Got Some Teeth," achieved moderate success with its heavy rotation on radio stations. It managed to climb up to number fifty-four on the Billboard Hot 100. In the UK, "Got Some Teeth" peaked at number eight in the singles charts.

Trice left Shady Records in 2009, sparking rumors of bad blood between fellow Detroit rappers Eminem and Dr. Dre. Speculations were further fanned with the release of the single "The Giant," although they quickly dismissed the rumors.

On April 22, 2010, online hip-hop news portal Rap Basement announced Trice's plan to launch his independent music label, Black Market Entertainment. His music imprint, under Universal, was scheduled on May 7 of that year. Three days before his label's inauguration, Trice also confirmed that Eminem would appear on his upcoming 2012 album "Bottoms Up."

Under his own record imprint, Obie Trice has released two more albums: 2015's "The Hangover" and 2019's "The Fifth."
