On September 1, Tuesday, Vulture shared an interview with Big Sean. When asked about his hit song "IDFWU", he clarified that it was not meant to be a diss towards Naya Rivera.
The question posed to him was, "Do you regret making the song 'IDFWU', a song that many interpreted as being about your ex, the late Naya Rivera?"
Big Sean revealed that it was a hard question to answer because he is still processing her passing, and he does not feel comfortable talking about it out of respect for her. He compliments his ex-fianceé, saying that she has left such a big impact on people and has done many great things in her life and her career. His song ended up hurting that since many associated the song to be about her.
Big Sean revealed he did not make "IDFWU" to diss her. He revealed he made the song and even played it for her, and that she knew and liked the song. He goes on to say that they had a very public relationship and thus, a very public break-up. They were young and forgave each other and have moved on from it.
He goes on to say if he had known about the tragic incident that was to happen, he would have never made the song.
His full statement reads:
"That is a tough question to answer because I am still processing a lot of that ... I do not feel comfortable talking about it because I want to respect her. She has made such an impact on people, and she has done so many great things in her life and her career that it was hurtful to even have that [song] be associated with her. It was not a diss to her. I truly made the song and played it for her. She knew about it, and she liked it. We had a breakup that was very public, and we were young and we forgave each other and moved on from that. If I would have known something this tragic would have happened, I would have never made the song."
Back in early July, it was announced that Naya Rivera had passed away. She drowned in Lake Piru, near Santa Clarita, California, while swimming with her four-year-old son Josey. Her son was found alive on the boat they rented. When Josey was found, he told investigators that they were swimming when his mother suddenly helped him back onto the boat. She was unable to climb back onto the boat herself and disappeared into the mother. She was not wearing a life jacket. Her body was recovered five days after she was reported missing.
At the time of her death, she was filming the show "Step Up", where she played the female lead.
Following her passing, Big Sean posted a tribute for Naya Rivera to his Instagram account. In his tribute, he said, "I appreciate and cherish everything that ever happened between us for making me wiser and a better pesrson."
View this post on InstagramRest In Peace Naya, God Bless your Soul! Thank you for blessing us all with your talent and presence. you are a hero! Not just because of how you saved your son, also because of the barriers you knocked down for so many people to make them feel confident in themselves and to stand tall and be proud when they couldn’t achieve that on their own. I appreciate and cherish everything that ever happened between us for making me wiser and a better person. I’m still grieving and in shock, I can’t believe this is real. I’m praying for you and your family and I know your watching over them and protecting them. Rest In Peace Naya A post shared by BIGSEAN (@bigsean) on Jul 17, 2020 at 10:23pm PDT
