Dua Lipa has been named in a copyright infringement lawsuit for allegedly stealing "Levitating" from a Florida reggae band.
Multiple news sites cited an outlet's report about Dua Lipa's recent legal issue concerning her hit song, "Levitating." A band called Artikal Sound System reportedly filed a legal document alleging that the singer's song is a ripoff of their 2017 track, "Live Your Life."
The document state that Dua Lipa and her team heard their earworm before 2020. At that time, the "Don't Start Now" hitmaker's team and made a copy out of it.
Artikal Sound System did not detail how Dua Lipa potentially applied the ripoff on "Levitating," but the group also sued Warner Records in the document. They are now demanding profits that "Levitating" made as well as other damages fees.
Dua Lipa and her party are yet to address the issue. Meanwhile, fans have divided opinions on the matter, with most people seemingly found out what went wrong in the track.
Did Dua Lipa Truly Copy Artikal Sound System's Song?
On Twitter, some fans called out the reggae group for trying to milk Lipa by filing a lawsuit. Some, however, spotted the similarities between the two tracks.
Most internet users said that "Levitating" and "Live Your Life" have similar chord progressions. They also defended Artikal Sound System.
"I don't understand why people are bashing the reggae band for suing. Do you realize how many songs are stolen from a hole in wall bands who get no credit or money? How is that fair? Meanwhile, Dua Lipa & suits get rich. The song is clearly a carbon copy," a Twitter user explained.
Still, Dua Lipa's fans defended the singer and claimed that she surely never heard the "unknown" song.
Amid the issue, fans chose to look at the brighter side and celebrated the "Levitating" milestone. A fan page on Twitter noted that the song is now the 6th longest-charting Billboard Hot 100 song of all time.
It also received several nominations since its release, including MTV Millennial Awards' Global Hit of the Year, Joox Indonesia Music Awards' Global Song of the Year, MTV Video Music Awards' Song of the Year and Song of Summer, and American Music Awards' Favorite Pop Song.
The same song is currently up to win iHeartRadio Music Awards' Song of the Year.
