In music, misheard lyrics are almost as normal as identical song titles. People are often shocked upon knowing what the actual lyrics are - maybe because it sounded like another word, or the singer might have a different style of how they enunciated the lyrics.
For a Wheel of Fortune contestant, he was almost sent home because he mispronounced the title of the 1993 hit "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics.
Wheel of Fortune Eurythmics Lyrics Mixup
In ABC's Wheel of Fortune Season 39, Episode 132, the player, Chris Bryant, is supposed to fill in the blanks of a song lyric for $1,050 dollars.
As evident as it is displayed on the board, Bryant answered, "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." However, he pronounced "This" as "These," therefore losing his chance to solve the puzzle. But he still advanced to the next round and took home a whooping $26,405.
This booboo, however, sparked online discussions and google searches for television viewers. As they too thought that it was supposed to be "these."
A quick google search for the song's title would give out results that it was supposed to be "This."
But, Eurythmics' Scottish singer Annie Lennox did sound like she was saying the word with a longer "e," which led fans to think that it was supposed to be "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These)," instead of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)."
Twitter believes #SweetDreamsAreMadeOfThese is right
Fans of the song and those who are engrossed in the episode stormed to Twitter to defend Bryant's "mispronounciation."
A user is not backing down until she hears Annie Lennox confirm the right lyrics to the Euruythmics' beloved hit.
One even thought the game screwed Bryant, because she thought that "This" and "Disagree," the next line of the chorus, does not rhyme together.
This mix-up stems back to the actual meaning of the lyrics. Are sweet dreams really made of "this" or "these?"
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) Lyrics Meaning
As shocking it may sound, Dave Stewart revealed to American Songwriter that the now-iconic song was not as loved before by music publishers as it is now.
Stewart revealed that the song came on the heels when the two, who had just broken up, got back together and started writing again to write their breakthrough album as a duo. Dave described Annie at the time of writing as "feeling very down."
Lennox, who heard Dave playing an instrumental beat with a piano, drum, and synthesizer, had a quick AHA moment and shouted, "Sweet dreams are made of this!"
And from there, the song became the duo's "sweet dream" that came to life as it hit No. 1 in fourteen different counties.
