Daddy Yankee on Reggaeton
In a previous interview, Daddy Yankee said he brought reggaeton to the mainstream music market, saying he "took the bullets."
The reason why he went with the genre is that he wanted the public to understand his essence, where he came from, and what he represents. He also wanted to take his culture to "the very top."
"I had to take the culture with me everywhere so it became permanent instead of fizzling out like other genres where artists simply promote themselves," he said.
Originally, Reggaeton was only dominant on the East Coast. When he first released "Barrio Fino," the West Coast didn't get his music.
Daddy Yankee took the international music scene by storm when he released his 2004 breakthrough hit "Gasolina," which became one of the most notable Latin songs of all time.
He managed to top the Billboard Latin Albums chart six times throughout his career.
