Billie Eilish did not express a desire to "be impoverished" in order to connect with the majority of her followers. However, a quote stating exactly that is circulating the Internet, which can be dangerous for those who are quick to believe such. After all, the message can also be de-empowering.
Numerous users on social media have shared a false comment attributed to the 20-year-old singer about her desire to be poor in order to connect with her followers.
However, Reuters' fact-checking staff has refuted the rumors, revealing that the comment originated from a Twitter account unrelated to Eilish.
The bogus statement, which has been widely shared on Facebook, states: "In a new interview, Billie states that she cried when she got rich and 'wanted to be poor so I can relate to most of my fans."
Additionally, the post features a photo of the Happier Than Ever singer with the caption: "'When I got rich, I started balling my eyes out, I wanted to be poor so I can relate to most of my fans.' Billie said candidly. 'I still want to be broke and poor, it looks really fun and cute.' Billie said laughing."
The wording of the fabricated post omits the publication's name and date.

According to Reuters, the original post was made by an account called @BilliesUpdatess that has since been suspended.
"Your best source on 7x Grammy Winner, Billie Eilish. NOT affiliated with anything related to Billie Eilish," the bio of the account read.
Alexandra Baker, Eilish's representative, also verified to the newspaper that the message is a hoax.
While she did not say these things, it is also not surprising that many would believe she did - not because she'll scoff at the plight of those truly poor, but because of her attitude towards wealth and fame. She has always shared that she does not like the fame she has.
In a recent interview, Billie Eilish even opened up about the impact that fame brings and said no one should be given that kind of power.
The pop artist discussed a range of issues in a recent interview with British Vogue, including her progress as a songwriter and people who abuse their authority. "That's a crazy feeling. Nobody should be given the power that we're given," she stated.
