Mercyful Fate members headbanged again in front of their fans after being out of the spotlight for the past 23 years.

Long-time fans of Mercyful Fate had been wanting to hear from the metal band again in the past years since releasing their last studio album, "9," in 1999.

After a long wait, Mercyful Fate officially reunited in their first concert in 23 years.

Blabbermouth confirmed that the band brought back their fans to the past again by playing their hit songs at the Expo Plaza in Hannover, Germany. They served as the support act for VOLBEAT.

The band did not disappoint, though, as they offered a new song and included it in their seven-song set during the concert.

The new track in question, "The Jackal of Salzburg," will be part of their upcoming studio album. It is expected to be released in 2023.

Frontman King Diamond joined Hank Shermann (guitar), Bjarne T. Holm (drums), Mike Wead (guitar), and Joey Vera (bass).

Aside from Mercyful Fate's new song, the band also played "The Oath," "A Corpse Without Soul," "Curse of the Pharaohs," "Evil," and "A Dangerous Meeting."

Hank Shermann Hinted at New Song

Before the reunion happened, Shermann dropped a hint two years ago that he was working on the first new music after more than two decades.

In an interview with the Australian music outlet, Heavy, the guitarist said that the band members continued processing their music despite being in different locations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"[Singer] King [Diamond] is living in Texas, in the States. I'm living here north of Copenhagen, in Denmark. The drummer [Bjarne T. Holm] is also here, so I work with him in the rehearsal room shaping the new songs. The other guitar player [Mike Wead] is in Stockholm, Sweden, and our new bass player [Joey Vera] is in Los Angeles," he said, per Yahoo! Entertainment.

He also divulged at that time that they had been pouring efforts for a reunion for some time.

While Shermann continues to dedicate himself to the band, he also focuses on his solo works. He previously released "The Institute," a two-part concept album. He also released on track from the project "Masquerade of Madness," marking his first music in over a decade.
