If you remember, back in May, Danny Gokey and Elliott Yamon stopped by American Idol for a visit. Danny shared the big news that he and wife Leyicet are expecting their second child. Last month, Danny shared the moment when they found out that baby #2 is a girl on his Twitter, saying, "We recently found out the gender of our baby forming in my wife's stomach. Here's what we found out!! https://instagram.com/p/qrZzcuHd2R/" Fans around the world were virtually high-fiving him and sending their congrats.
Some of those warm and fuzzies went south this week when he humorously posted a picture on his Facebook of his CD cover on a cookie and said, "Umm I don't know how to put this...But I'm kind of a big deal." Most fans that commented got the joke and laughed along with him. They "got" the fact that it was a quote from the 2004 movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Sadly, some didn't find the cookie nearly sweet enough and started throwing out barbs about him not being humble enough.
Personally, having met Danny and having spent enough time with him to see his truly humble heart and spirt, I think there is more to it. I believe that he was also showing fans how little things can make him smile. So let's break down Danny Gokey's big deal vs. not big deal factor:
- A top 3 finalist on the eighth season of Fox's American Idol (No patting himself on the back, strutting around, telling everyone how famous he is - Humble wins)
- Being the first-ever male American Idol contestant to sign with a major country label (No preening, telling everyone how fabulous he is - Humble wins)
- Having the best opening week for a debut album from a male country artist in almost two decades with My Best Days (No shouting from the rooftops to tell everyone how famous he is - Humble wins)
- Watching his sophomore album (and debut Christian release), Hope in Front of Me debut at No. 1 on multiple Nielsen SoundScan Billboard Contemporary Christian music sales charts (No "I debuted at #1, I'm better than everyone else" stories - Humble wins)
- Getting a cookie with his CD cover and face on it (Look ma! I made it! I'm on a cookie! I must be famous! - Self-deprecating sense of humor - check. Humble? Yep! It's still there!)
So to those who got themselves all twisted up because Danny Gokey shared a joke, look at the bigger picture and lighten' up! This wasn't ego speaking. He wasn't trying to puff himself up and he wasn't shouting from the virtual rooftops that he's now to be treated like royalty because his face is on a cookie. Laugh and move on!
