Is an N.W.A. making a comeback?
Dr. Dre is apparently taking the lead in organizing a reunion of the hit hip-hop duo, who haven't performed together in 33 years.
According to Radar Online, the music producer approached founding N.W.A. member DJ Yella two months ago to create new music.
DJ Yella, on the other hand, reportedly rejected down Dr. Dre's suggestion and claimed he hadn't produced any music since the burial of Eazy-E, the Godfather of Gangsta, in 1995.
According to DJ Yella, whose real name is Antoine Carraby, "I just had this conversation with Dre, maybe a month and a half ago, and I told him, 'I just don't make music!' He was trying to hook up and do something, and it ain't me no more; it's not in me!"
He further told "Murder Master Music Show" podcast, "He is doing some stuff and was just seeing where my head was, and I just told him 'Hey, I haven't made music in 25 years, ever since the funeral I'm done, that was it for me, I'm good!'"
After releasing the 1988 album "Straight Outta Compton," N.W.A. rose to the pinnacle of hip hop aristocracy. However, after only four years of playing together, their group's fame tore them apart.
Except for Dr. Dre, the remaining members of N.W.A. last played at the BET Experience in 2015. Despite the absence of Dr. Dre, the group played numerous famous tracks, including "Chin Cheek" and "F--- The Police."
Why Did N.W.A. Split?
By the time "Efil4zaggin" was released, Dr. Dre was apparently disgruntled with his contract with their record label.
He and The D.O.C. departed the group and Ruthless Records for Death Row Records in early 1992, officially ending N.W.A.
However, Ice Cube was reputedly the first member of the group to quit, although continuing to write gangster rap throughout the 1990s. It was also stated that he quit owing to royalties concerns because he wrote about half of the lyrics of "Straight Outta Compton."
It was also believed that Ice Cube departed Ruthless Records because he was envious of Eazy E's success.
Jerry Heller, former manager of the band, claims that "He aspired to be Eazy E. He felt envious since Eazy is not only a crucial member of N.W.A. with a lucrative solo career, but he is also the president of his own record label."
He allegedly felt cheated out of a fair portion of the income.
Ice Cube and DJ Yella had a partial reunion in June at Los Angeles' Staples Center, but the latter is back to spinning records and traveling the world as a DJ.
