What Was Singer Helen Grayco's Cause of Death? Spike Jones Wife Dead at 77

Pop singer Helen Grayco died at the age of 97, her son revealed.

Grayco's child with Spike Jones, Creative Arts Emmy Awards producer Spike Jones Jr., sent a statement to The Hollywood Reporter confirming the singer's passing. He revealed that the matriarch died at her home in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Billboard noted Helen Grayco's cause of death, revealing she died after her battle with cancer. It was not divulged what type of cancer she suffered with. But it remains the leading cause of death worldwide, per the World Health Organization.

It can start in any part of a person's body, but the most common types include the rectum, prostate, breast, colon, and lung.

Following the death news, her colleagues and fans honored her in heartfelt tweets.

Deanna Martin wrote, "Our hearts are broken at the loss of our dear friend Helen Grayco. One of the most beautiful and talented singers that we had the honor to call a dear friend. Rest In Peace sweet Helen."

Helen Grayco's Life

Born on Sep. 20, 1924, Grayco started her career early by singing on a local radio program. At the young age of 8, she tried her luck by searching for a career in Hollywood.

While her popularity rose, she started her own radio show, "The Carnival Hour." She also famously became part of the 1935 "A Night at The Opera" and "That Certain Age."

Although she was only at the early stages of her career, she was able to score a chance to perform with Chuck Cabot and Red Nichols.

Her whole life changed when Jones Sr. approached her and offered her a job after watching Stan Kenton's orchestra performance. They decided to work together before his scheduled tour.

In a 2009 interview, Grayco recalled feeling insulted when Jones Sr. expressed his desire to hire her.

"He had just done 'Cocktails for Two' and all that stuff that he was known for. 'I don't know where I could possibly fit in in your group. I'm not a comedienne,' I told him," she said.

But her then-soon-to-be-husband persuaded her by telling her she would be able to do her thing and arrangements.

After that encounter, they got married in 1948 and spent their lives together until Jones Sr.'s death in 1965.

Following her husband's death, she headlined the Copa and dominated the NBC program, "The Dean Martin Show."
