Data shows that the ratings of the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards have increased compared to last year's telecast.

Happenings at the recently concluded Awards show are still a talking point on social media today - Taylor Swift's new album announcement, Nicki Minaj's Video Vanguard Performance, BLACKPINK's VMA debut, and even Bad Bunny's controversial dancer kiss.

Apart from this, MTV has also recorded the growth of the VMAs audience both on-air and online, which seemed to be the reason for the rating spike.

2022 MTV Video Music Awards Highlights

Taking place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, last Sunday, the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards was one of the biggest nights in music this year.

Taylor Swift, who took home the Video of the Year Award, treated her fans with well-deserved news - an album announcement. Nicki Minaj also stole the show as a host, performer, and a Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Awardee.

BLACKPINK also made their American Awards show debut, with Lisa taking home the Best KPOP Video moonman. Bad Bunny also becomes the first non-English language speaker to win Artist of the Year and the second Latinx to do so.

Maneskin became the first Italian group to win Best Alternative Video, while Annita scored Best Latin Video, making her the first woman to achieve the award.

These VMAs highlights definitely become a pop culture moment that has also gone down in VMAs history.

2022 MTV VMAs Producers Guess What Made This Year's Telecast Unique

Based on Nielsen data, all on-air telecast of the MTV VMAs 2022 (pre-show, ceremony, on-air replays) has tallied an average of 3.9 million viewers across all Paramount Global channels, including The CW.

Compared to last year's 3.7 million, the 2022 VMAs gained 3% this year.

According to producers, they think the biggest reason for the show's increase is its diverse demographic lineup.

"We had a very diverse lineup in terms of demographics. We had artists from South America, from Europe, from South Korea. Also, we staged the show in New Jersey where there is just an incredible fan base and energy for all of this music," Jesse Ignjatovic told Billboard.

Aside from the diverse lineup, the producers also pointed out that they have catered to the growing age demographics of the VMAs.

Apparently, Jack Harlow and BLACKPINK appealed to the core demographics of the show, while LL Cool J and Red Hot Chili Peppers appealed to the VMA's legacy.

Notably, the producers cited that Nicki Minaj, the star of the night, ticks all these checkboxes.
