In March of 2022, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins met his untimely demise in Bogotá, Colombia, at the age of 50, leaving his family, fellow musicians, and fans devastated.
The first day of a two-day tribute concert in honor of the drummer was held in London's Wembley Stadium, and it saw numerous performances from fellow musicians-and an extra special performance from Hawkins' son, Oliver Shane.
The 16-year-old took his father's spot in front of the drums as he joined the Foo Fighters to play "My Hero."
The Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl welcomed him by introducing him to the crowd, "ladies and gentlemen, we have one more drummer that's gonna come up and play with us tonight,"
"And let me tell you, I don't think I've ever seen anyone hit the drums this hard as this person. But beyond that, he's a member of our family and he needs to be here tonight with all of us."
"And I think it's gonna make sense that he's gonna come up and play with us tonight. Ladies and gentlemen, would you please welcome Mister Shane Hawkins on the drums," Grohl said as the crowd went wild, and Shane begins playing intro of the Foo Fighters' song "My Hero."
Shane is seen passionately playing the drums, his hair whipping back and forth, while a picture of Hawkins and Shane appeared on the screens.
Prior to the tribute concert, Shane also honored his father by playing the drums to "My Hero," performed by The Alive in July during a Laguna Beach block party, reports say.
An Emotional Tribute Concert
Grohl led the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert alongside his bandmates Nate Mendel, Rami Jaffee, Pat Smear, and Chris Shiflett.
At the beginning of the concert, he addressed the audience, "Ladies and gentlemen, tonight, we are gathered here to celebrate the life, the music, and the love of our dear friend, our bandmate, our brother, Taylor Hawkins,"
"For those of you who knew him personally, you know that no one else could make you smile, or laugh, or dance, or sing [as] he could. And for those of those that admired him from afar, I'm sure you've all felt the same thing."
The Taylor Hawkins tribute concert was well-attended by musicians and audiences alike, as it saw performances from Paul McCartney, Brian May, Liam Gallagher, Mark Ronson, Travis Barker, Geddy Lee, Roger Taylor, Supergrass, and Wolfgang Van Halen. Grohl's daughter Violet also paid tribute to Hawkins.
Fans were moved by the performances, but most especially by Shane's participation.
Another fan commented on Grohl's reaction to watching Shane play the drums, "The pure joy and happiness on Dave's face while watching Taylor's son Shane Hawkins play drums on 'My Hero'."
Another user tweeted, "Shane Hawkins played like it's his throne. Not a dry eye over here. Cheers, Shane."
