Before the fans riot, Lil Pump wants to clarify some things: he has nothing against iconic rapper J. Cole, he just disagrees with his comments about his future in rap music.
The 22-year-old rapper reflected on how far he has gone since his SoundCloud days. He was one of the most prominent and promising rappers on the website.
However, according to reports, he has not grown much since then-a notion that J. Cole echoed-and that's something Lil Pump does not agree with.
"He was trying to understand [the] young generation, 'cause at that time people didn't understand what was going on with the music," he told Bootleg Kev.
Despite disagreeing with the 37-year-old comments about his career, he claims that he is still on good terms with the rapper.
'There's this new wave coming in, we don't understand it but we're just gonna roll with it.' But I fuck with J. Cole, I don't have no problems with him."
This follows the DJ asking him whether J. Cole was correct about the new generation of rappers in his song "1985."
And while the rapper disagreed, several reports noted that he has not released any new material in recent times. Instead, he has dabbled in other pursuits like joining OnlyFans.
Relevance
Many question whether Lil Pump is correct in stating that he remains relevant to this day after his questionable stunt back in 2020.
He reportedly joined Donald Trump onstage and pledged allegiance to the "Trump 202020" campaign," and denounced President Joe Biden, calling him "Sleepy Joe.
Although he did not verbalize it, many thought that J. Cole had a "told you do" moment following the stunt.
Interview
J. Cole criticized Lil Pump's acts for attention back in 2018. They had an hour-long conversation, which was cordial enough, despite the two did not see eye-to-eye with certain topics.
"There's a percentage of those kids that might know that you're, like, trolling in a sense," said Cole. "Yo, he just doing wild shit because he knows that's what the fuck this shit is about, that's how you get attention, he's just a wild dude.' And they not taking it too serious, right?"
Although Lil Pump also disagreed, he added that he listens to J. Cole's music and their aspirations that brought them to the music scene.
Their stark differences, though, especially in terms of age was not missed. It emphasized how the rappers came from vastly different generations and how it manifests in their music.
According to reports, when Lil Pump revealed that he started rapping in 2016, J. Cole's jaw dropped in shock.
Unlike Lil Pump who had his musical start in SoundCloud, J. Cole rose to prominence back in 2007 following the debut of his mixtape "The Come Up."
He is considered as one of the most prominent rappers of his generation. In 2011, he won Best Mixtape for "Friday Night Lights" at the BET Hip Hop Awards, as well as Best Live Performer and Album of the Year for "2014 Forest Hills Drive" in 2015. He received a Grammy Award for "A Lot" winning Best Rap Song in 2020.
