Celine Dion's health battles caused the singer to step away from the spotlight several times.
The concertgoers of Dion's upcoming European tour received bad news after the singer postponed the dates. Their hearts were left more broken after the crooner revealed that she has been diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder.
According to Yale Medicine, the cause of the rare disease remains unknown. It causes a person's muscles in the limbs and torso to suffer spasms and rigidity.
Neurologist Richard Nowak said, "People with Stiff Person Syndrome can run the spectrum from mild to severe, and a personalized approach to treating the disease is the best way to ensure an improved outcome."
But aside from the recent health diagnosis, Dion endured other health issues in the past that also caused her to cancel several shows.
Celine Dion's Health Battles, Illnesses Explored
Dion's health issues started in 2018 when she was forced to cancel the dates of her tours to undergo ear surgery. Her representative explained at that time, the "My Heart Will Go On" singer had been dealing with an issue in her middle ear called the patulous eustachian tube dysfunction.
Per Johns Hopkins Medicine, the tube connects the middle ear to the nasal-sinus cavity to balance the pressure in the middle ear and drain fluid from it. It also protects the organ from hearing the sounds of one's body.
This condition made Dion suffer hearing irregularities. Thus, it ultimately affected her ability to sing, and surgery was the only way to correct it as her ear-drop medications no longer worked.
She dealt with eating disorder rumors, as well, but she constantly denied it as she explained she would not be able to tour if she did not eat enough or if she consumed too much.
Fans got even more worried when she revealed her debilitating health condition last year. She disclosed that her severe and persistent muscle spasms forced her to cancel her shows.
At that time, she expected to feel good after taking a rest for a while. But in the end, she had to cancel the remaining shows of her Courage World Tour's North American leg.
In the months leading to her recent revelation, the "To Love You More" crooner has continuously faced the same health issue. Now, she learned what exactly she has been battling with.
