Aaron Carter was attempting to turn his life back around for several months prior to his untimely death in November, and one of the things he was preparing for was his reunion with his son, Prince Lyric.
According to TMZ, the singer's fiancee was finally granted full custody of Prince, who was taken out of their care several times in September because of drug abuse and domestic violence concerns.
"I am excited about getting custody of our son. Aaron took it really hard when our son got taken away," Melanie Martin told People.
"I know Aaron would have been ecstatic. This victory is in his honor. I only wish Aaron could be here to share this moment with me," she continued.
Apparently, the "Candy" singer was not only getting back into rehab before his sudden death, but he was also gearing up for Prince's return-in a big way.
In fact, he planned to sell off his California home, where he was reportedly found dead, and buy a new home to start anew with his 13-month-old son.
"Selling my 2nd home. Real estate has been super good to me. Ready for a new chapter in my 3rd home [where] I plan on staying to make a beautiful life for my family," wrote the late singer on Twitter.
Although he did not live long enough to see it come to fruition, Martin made sure to include him in her statements regarding the custody grant.
"I'm honoring Aaron today and I know he would be so proud of me. I'm very emotional thinking we could have been a family, but Aaron would be so happy knowing I got him back," she said.
Prince Lyric
According to Hollywood Life, Carter and Martin lost custody of their then-11-month-old son; Carter checked himself into rehab while Martin had post-partum depression, which was not ideal conditions to raise a child.
So Prince was placed in the temporary custody of Martin's mother. This news was revealed days after the singer's death, and representatives confirmed that Prince would stay with Martin's mother until a judge says otherwise.
"Everyone agrees that he is in the best place for him to be right now," the representative said.
Another source revealed how Carter felt about the entire setup: "Aaron's son is being cared for by Melanie's mom, who he has been in the custody of for several months now. He had said that being a father was the most amazing thing that happened to him and he was really trying to get his life back in order so that he be a present father to his boy."
In 2018, Carter shared his excitement about potentially becoming a father to People, saying " "I'm going to be a good father. I know it," he said at the time. "I want lots of kids, lots of stability, lots of happiness and laughter and learning and having fun. It's going to be good."
