SZA had five years to prepare for her sophomore album, "SOS," and a lot of thought, work, and planning went into it before she finally unveiled it to fans and listeners.
"SOS" boasts 23 songs, with four collaborations-although she revealed that she enlisted more collaborations, and only four artists turned their verses in.
Now SZA is back to reveal more secrets about "SOS," starting with the question everyone has on their mind: why aren't the fan-favorite songs included?
"Joni," "PSA," "Plotting Season and "Boy from South Detroit" unfortunately did not make it to the highly-anticipated album's tracklist.
And apparently, they just weren't good enough, as per the members of her team as well as Terrence "Punch" Henderson, the TDE boss, say.
"A song called 'Boy from South Detroit' that Twitter wanted really bad, Rob [Bisel] nor Punch [Terrence Henderson] really cared about that song," she revealed in an interview.
But don't get angry at SZA-because she tried to talk them into including the songs in the album, but in the end, her team decided against it.
"They weren't excited about it and Rob was just like, 'I don't really think this is the song.' And then Punch was indifferent about the song, but I was like, 'No, I really believe in this!'"
Then added why she put her complete faith in Henderson in curating the perfect tracklist for her album, "Punch is an expert, I'm not an expert at tracklisting. It's actually one of my weakest points, period."
"All I know how to do is make the music that I want," SZA says.
'SOS' Sessions
According to a Rolling Stone report, it says that SZA actually has a song featuring Lizzo.
One of the geniuses behind "SOS," Rob Bisel, who served as the albums' producer, engineer, and songwriter revealed this little surprise: "We just happened to have that one pulled up the day that Lizzo was there."
He is referring to the song "F2F," which was originally called "Charlatan." With that being said, there is a handful of songs that SZA brought Lizzo into, but those are yet to be released.
"There's definitely a handful [of tracks with Lizzo]," Bisel said. "I don't want to incriminate myself here, but there's some stuff floating around for sure."
SZA also gushed about working with the "Truth Hurts" singer: "We have so much fun together, and I feel like she gets me. She's another person who has hella [wide] music tastes and doesn't fit in anybody's box of anything. She makes it seem like she doesn't even care, like she just does whatever she wants."
"I just love being with her, just as a friend and hanging out. So whenever she comes to a studio, I just feel like, 'Let's drop into some bullshit.'"
