This holiday season, Mariah Carey is receiving criticism, and it's all due of her wildly popular song, "All I Want for Christmas."
The "Queen of Christmas" was criticized by Walter Afanasieff for reportedly claiming exclusive ownership of the song.
The "We Belong Together" hitmaker revealed in 2017 that she first began writing the song on a piano as a young child. It was revealed by Walter, who co-wrote the Christmas song, that Mariah nearly certainly couldn't have come up with it on her alone.
"She doesn't understand music," he said in a podcast interview for "Hot Takes & Deep Dives."
Walter went on to say, "She doesn't know chord changes and music theory or anything like that. She doesn't know a diminished chord from a minor seventh chord to a major seventh chord."
The music producer revealed that when she was young, she used her finger to play a piano to create a tune with a complex chord structure.
The 64-year-old music composer also questioned why Mariah Carey didn't reveal it earlier rather than only recently when she "began to hint at the reality."
Walter joked that "it simply sort of evolved in her imagination."
He even mentioned that the Grammy-winning singer didn't play any instruments when the song was being composed and that, up until the past few months, everyone was in agreement on who wrote the song.

The mother of twins gave an account of the songwriting process in the 2019 documentary" Mariah Carey Is Christmas: The Story of "All I Want for Christmas Is You."
She stated in the documentary that "It's A Wonderful Life" was playing in a home in New York while she was there.
Mariah could hear the melody everywhere she was, but after entering a little room, she discovered a keyboard and began playing it.
She acknowledged that she is not a great pianist, even claiming that some of the tunes she writes are "happy accidents."
They apparently came up with numerous different concepts to make "All I Want for Christmas" sound and feel like a classic when it came time to create the song with Walter.
For Mariah Carey's fourth studio album, which was released in 1994, the song was written. Since then, it has earned a spotamong the most memorable Christmas-related songs in music history.
