Jo Mersa Marley, the grandson of reggae legend Bob Marley, was found unresponsive in a vehicle on Tuesday. He was 31 years old.
Bob Marley is a reggae legend, and his grandson Joseph "Jo Mersa" Marley was already on his way, following his footsteps when he suddenly died on Tuesday.
WZP Radio announced his death through social media. It read: "Update: Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that Jo'Mersa Marley, son of Stephen Marley and grandson of Bob Marley, has passed away unexpectedly from an asthma attack.
"[...] We send our deepest condolences to the Marley family during this difficult time."
According to the New York Post, the reggae star was found unresponsive in his vehicle, and he reportedly died of an asthma attack.
Reports did not specify the location of Mersa's vehicle, however, they do note that the singer left behind a wife and daughter.
The 31-year-old is one of Marley's numerous grandchildren. After all, the late reggae legend had 11 children with seven different partners, reports say.
Mersa is Stephen Marley's son, and unlike Bob Marley, Mersa was lesser known but had a loyal and solid fanbase who are currently mourning his death.
Mersa began making music in 2014, with the release of his debut studio album, "Comfortable." He then released his next and last album "Eternal" in 2021.
His more well-known songs are "Burn it Down, "Made It," and "No Way Out."
Avoidable?
According to the Mayo Clinic, an asthma attack causes one's airways to become swollen and inflamed, which causes the person experiencing the attack to struggle to breathe, cough, or wheeze.
Healthline noted that asthma attacks can be fatal, mostly because the person experiencing it isn't getting enough oxygen into their lungs, and can even stop their breathing altogether.
Reports say that 13 out of every one million died from an asthma attack in America in 2020.
Although the cases are few and far between, they can still happen especially when the person experiencing the attack does not know what to do or isn't prepared to handle the situation, Health Match noted.
Unlike his grandson, Marley did not die of similar causes. Instead, the musician died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 36.
He was diagnosed with a type of malignant melanoma under his toenail in 1977.
Doctors advised him to amputate his toe, but he refused, citing his religious beliefs. And while he grappled with his illness, he continued touring and performing, until his cancer had spread to his brain, lungs, and liver.
