Just before the new year started, Megan Thee Stallion had the perfect ending to her tumultuous 2022 - not only did she score a small victory on her 1501 Music legal fiasco, but she won on the Felony assault trial against Tory Lanez.
But ever since the conviction has been announced, fans of the Candian rapper had been protesting, saying that the evidence presented to the court does not warrant his conviction.
However, hours after the year turned, the recording of Tory Lanez, formally known as Daystar Peterson, confessing to Megan Thee Stallion's ex-best friend Kelsey Harris has circulated online.
According to Rolling Stone, the recording, which was entered into evidence on the trial, was reportedly "crucial" to secure his conviction. But contrary to others' speculations, the recording has been made available legally online as it became a public record following his conviction.
Lanez was convicted and found guilty of felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a concealed, unregistered firearm, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
In the now-viral video recording, Lanez was heard speaking to Harris over the phone, five hours after the shooting, acknowledging that he did something wrong while being intoxicated by alcohol.
"I know she [Megan] probably never, ever gonna talk to me ever again. But I just want you to know, bruh, I was just so fucking drunk. I ain't even know what the fuck was going on, bruh, like deadass. I'd never do some shit like that... I was just so fucking drunk, n***a, I just didn't understand what the fuck was going on, bruh. Regardless, that's not going to make anything right and that's not going to make my actions right," he said in the recording.
The publication noted that the evidence was used by the prosecution, cornering Peterson with the indirect confession of doing something to Megan Thee Stallion.
For the prosecution, it would take "mental gymnastics" to interpret the contents of the recording other than what it was clearly saying.
After being found guilty, Tory Lanez is facing 22 years and eight months in prison. Tory Lanez's sentence will be formally given on Jan. 27, 2023. He is also facing potential deportation since he is a Canadian citizen.
However, Peterson's legal camp said that they will appeal to the court to reverse the decision.
