Hundreds of celebrities are taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but few have actually done it in front of a live audience.
Sunday night in Pittsburgh, Drake did just that. After an audience countdown, Lil Wayne dumped an enormous bucket of ice water on Drizzy, who proceeded to take off his shirt and nominate Beyoncé to get dumped next. He later posted a picture of the moment on Instagram with the following caption:
Ice Bucket Challenge we out heeeeeeere! The purpose is to donate money though people!!! Support the cause!
Here's a fan-shot Instagram video from the event:
The New York Times reports that the Ice Bucket Challenge has helped raise more than $13 million in donations over the past three weeks:
People have shared more than 1.2 million videos on Facebook between June 1 and Aug. 13 and mentioned the phenomenon more than 2.2 million times on Twitter since July 29, according to those sites. Donations to the ALS Association have spiked. As of Sunday, the association said it had received $13.3 million in donations since July 29, compared with $1.7 million during the same period last year. It said there were about 260,000 new donors. (With a spate of celebrities and business executives joining in over the past few days and pledging contributions, that number is expected to rise.)
The craze began after a 29-year-old man named Pete Frates dumped an ice bucket over his head nearly three weeks ago.
Frates, who suffers from ALS and can no longer speak, started a trend that has now reached the upper echelon of American society. Drake is the latest celebrity to pull off the stunt. He joins "Weird" Al Yankovic, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and hundreds of others who have recently been chilled for charity.
