Modest Mouse has been around since the early 90s and they amassed massive success and fans through the decades. However, there was a life-changing moment in 1997 that almost took the lives of the band members; what happened?
Before diving into the full story, take a look at how the group started from performing in a backyard to sold-out shows and music festivals.
According to Paste Magazine, the rock band was founded in Issaquah, Washington, in 1992. Original members include Isaac Brock, Eric Judy, and Jeremiah Green, all of which were teenagers at the time when they formed the musical act.
It all began in Brock's family backyard where they jam out and practice their sets until they eventually became successful locally. By 1996, they were able to release their first studio album titled "This Is A Long Drive Fro Someone With Nothing To Think About." (via Grunge)
They immediately stood out from any other rock bands around because of their unique take on songwriting and their lyrics are much different.
Since then, the band received several nods and nominations from prestigious award-giving bodies such as the Grammys, and the MTV Video Music Awards.

Modest Mouse Members Almost Died in 1997
During their first year as a big band, Modest Mouse went on tour in 1997. At the time, they were traveling with Pat Graham, the band's tour manager, photographer, and a good pal.
Graham detailed the encounter in his photography book, saying they were passing through Montana to travel to Chicago from Washington State when the weather changed all of a sudden. (via The Fader)
Little did they know, the snow would become a blizzard that led to their driver losing his control on an icy bridge. Their vehicle almost plunged into a river, but they were saved because of a guard rail.
After the scary accident, they were driving around when a large object obscured the road, when they looked closely, it was a frozen cow standing in front of them.
Since they had no other way out, the group had no choice but to sit inside with the heater on until their van eventually lost its power.
Fortunately for them, a cowboy riding a red Mustang was also around the area experiencing the same situation. The man let them stay in his vehicle until the following morning.
