Jeremy Renner celebrated his 52nd birthday in the hospital while still being treated for his injuries from being smashed by a snow plow.
The "Avengers" star, who has remained in the intensive care unit of his hospital since his tragic accident on January 1, was running to help a family member who was stranded in the snow on his Lake Tahoe property when he was struck by a seven-ton snow plow.
Following the accident, he was deemed to be in a severe condition and needed two surgeries including the implantation of metal pins around his leg.
But as of this week, he was awake and able to communicate. He even posted a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed with obvious facial bruising, thanking well-wishers for their nice comments.
According to a source who talked with Radar Online, the "Bourne Legacy" actor's buddies are now allegedly concerned and afraid that he would end up permanently disabled.
"Jeremy has already undergone two complex operations. But there are significant questions about whether he will ever be able to walk correctly, or at all.
His loved ones are concerned that, if he doesn't completely lose the limb, the injury is severe enough to prohibit him from moving the way he used to.
Jeremy could need surgically inserted rods to help his legs recover, but Dr. Gabe Mirkin, who isn't treating the actor for his injuries, cautioned that he might also have to undergo an amputation and use an artificial leg.
"This will be a long and slow recovery for him," the medical expert added.
Police said that Jeremy Renner attempted to use his 14,330-pound snow plow to help rescue a family member who had become stranded in the snow in a personal car.
Sheriff Darin Balaam claimed that as soon as he stepped out of the car to talk with the unnamed family member, the snow plow began to move. Jeremy attempted to re-enter the car, but was shortly struck by it.
The actor's upper body was crushed, and the right side of his chest collapsed, according to a 911 call placed after the incident. The Hollywood A-lister could be heard wailing and bleeding heavily from his head and other injuries in a call that TMZ was able to secure.
Jeremy Renner had trouble breathing before being flown from the scene of the accident to a neighboring hospital due to his wounds.
