Jewel described the horrifying moment she discovered "all of her money" was vanished. Worse, the culprit? Her own mother.
Jewel Embezzled By Own Mom, Abused By Dad
The four-time Grammy nominee claimed that her mother Lenedra, who was also her manager, stole a staggering $100 million from her throughout the course of her career.
She implied it could be because she did not really have a good relationship with her mom.
She said she didn't learn who my mother was until she was 30 or so. Jewel stated on Monday's "Verywell Mind Podcast" with Amy Morin that one day she just woke up and realized her own mom had stolen all of her money, over $100 million and then she was landed in massive debts.
Jewel has sold over 27 million albums globally, so it's hard to imagine her penniless.
She reveaaled that at the age of 34, she realized she was $3 million in debt, that her mother had stolen it, and that everything she believed her mother to be was not true; this was a psychologically challenging realization.
Growing up, Jewel's perspective of reality was distorted and built on a falsehood, she stated.
She explained that her parents divorced when she was eight years old, and she moved in with her father.
The singer also shared that nobody told her that her mother did not want to be a mother. Her father assumed responsibility for their upbringing as a result of her departure.
Unfortunately, the "Who Will Save Your Soul" singer stated that her father was abusive -- a violent alcoholic who assaulted her.
That's why, her younger version was so sure her mom is the good one. The father was an easy-to-identify "bad person" while "her mother appeared to be just the opposite."
The mother was described as tranquil, gentle, never yelled, and someone who never struck her. The singer said however, she was unaware at the time that she was being abused in another way.
Whenever she sought support from her mother, Jewel claims her worries were frequently met with silence.
Jewel recalls, in retrospect, "feeling loved" at the time. She didn't find the truth until much later.
Jewel Net Worth 2023
She's now 48 though; suffice to say, she has bounced back financially.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Jewel has a $14 million at present. The story of Jewel Kilcher's rise from poverty to wealth has been told numerous times. She was accepted to the famed Interlochen Arts Academy, where she studied singing and learned to play guitar, after having grown up in the Alaskan wilderness without indoor plumbing. She then began performing at coffeehouses and street fairs, while traveling and living in her van.
In the summer of 1994, after an executive from Atlantic Records heard her perform in a San Diego coffee shop on Thursday nights, her entire career was transformed.
Her debut album, "Pieces of You," was published in 1995 and went on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time. It sold 15 million copies and spent two years on the Billboard 200.
