For months now, Shakira has been releasing music that best represents her emotion-which is turbulent, to say the least.
However, throughout her toughest days, she had two people in her corner, cheering her on every step of the way.
According to reports, the "Hips Don't Lie" singer just released a new single titled "Acrostico," and it is unlike all her other releases-it is about motherly love.
The art for the song is an illustration of a mother bird being welcomed back to the nest by two chicks.
'Acrostico'
Shakira may be known to the rest of the world as one of the most popular Latin music singers, an amazing dancer, and a face that could very well launch a thousand ships, but to her sons, she is simply their mother.
The singer shares two boys, Milan and Sasha, with her ex Gerard Pique, and on multiple occasions, she has talked and gushed about them to anyone who will listen.
The previous year was tough on Shakira, who had to go through a lengthy and public custody battle-among other things-with Pique.
According to the Daily Mail UK, it took them 12 hours to come to a decision over the custody of their sons.
"We wish to communicate that we have signed an agreement that guarantees the welfare of our children and that will be ratified in court as part of a mere formal procedure," a joint statement from Shakira and Pique read.
"Our sole objective is to provide them with the upmost security and protection, and we trust that their privacy will be respected."
The turbulent back and forth between the ex-couple concluded with Shakira having the boys with her for the most part, and they are with Pique during the holidays.
The difficult and confusing setup was alluded to in the song. A snippet was leaked and the lyrics go: "The only thing I want is your happiness, but things are not always as we dream,
"Sometimes we run but we don't get there. Never doubt that here I will be."
New Life
Shakira and her sons have long since moved to Miami, and the singer is clearly doing a lot better.
She just received the honor of being Woman of the Year at the Billboard Latin Women in Music, where she talked about how music saved her.
"It's true that when I felt most lost, music put me in the road back to myself," she said in her speech. "But the most important lessons I learned from other women, and for them I wrote what I wrote and I sang what I sang.
"Because only a woman can love until she's ripped apart; can speak with the most brutal honesty; can sing with anger; dance in ecstasy and be brought to tears with emotion. Only a woman can do that."
