Everyone wasn't ready when Taylor Swift announced the release of "Midnights (Til Dawn Edition)" probably because everyone was already dead set in anticipating the release of "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" in July 2023.
But what shocked people even more was the addition of Ice Spice in the remix version - which got many Swifties and people on the internet thinking, was this more of a PR move on the side of Taylor Swift or was it really a genuine and authentic collaboration between the two artists?
Matty Healy's Racist Comments Against Ice Spice
For those who do not know, Matty Healy, whose now Taylor Swift's new beau, has said some things about Ice Spice back then.
In an episode of "The Adam Friedland Show," Matty Healy was asked if he knows Ice Spice, a then-burgeoning rapper from New York who wasn't that big yet.
"She's like a rapper from the Spice Girls... Inuit Spice Girl. Just this chubby Chinese lady," the trio discussed in the episode, with Healy taking the lead.
The trio then proceeded to throw some pretty racist jokes, questioning Ice Spice's real ancestry and even mocking her accent. By the way, Ice Spice is Nigerian and Dominican.
Backlash around Matty Healy continued to grow even further, among many controversial statements in the past around homophobia, Islamophobia, and the like.
Many fans were upset over the comments made, especially for Ice Spice, who has shown some love and confessed to listening to The 1975, Healy's band. Since then, Ice Spice's influence and fame shot. Her record with PinkPantheress on "Boys Are Liar Pt. 2," a collaboration with Nicki Minaj, and now, a remix of "Karma" with Taylor Swift.
Taylor Swift, Ice Spice 'Karma (Remix)'
Taylor Swift rarely collaborates with female artists. So far she has only collaborated with four - Phoebe Bridgers, The Chicks, Lana Del Rey, and HAIM. Now, Taylor Swift is launching her first-ever collaboration with a rapper, Ice Spice.
In "Midnights (Til Dawn Edition)," Swift is remixing "Karma" with Ice Spice to be released on Friday, May 26, 2023.
However, this link-up is questioned by fans - was it a ploy to bury Matty's (her new boyfriend) controversial statement against Ice Spice or was it really genuine?
The internet has some theories, but historically speaking, Swift wouldn't collaborate with an artist if she has no utmost respect and or belief in that artist. One user even pointed out that Ice Spice wouldn't collaborate with Swift either if she would feel betrayed too on her boyfriend's past statements.
