"The Little Mermaid" was one of the most highly-anticipated motion picture events by Disney for quite a long time. With the controversy that came about on the casting of Halle Bailey as Ariel, everyone's eyes on the movie have been peeled since Day 1.
Now, the movie is enjoying commercial success all over the world. But despite this, singer Paloma Faith gave her two cents after watching the flick with her young kids.
Did Paloma Faith Hated "The Little Mermaid?"
Apparently, Paloma Faith was one of the many people who stormed to the theatres on the weekend screenings of "Little Mermaid" in London.
After watching the movie, she voiced out some sentiments on her social media account.
"Just seen the new Little Mermaid with my kids and while I think Halle gives a good performance and it's great casting as a mother of girls, she gushed on a now-expired Instagram story, as quoted by Metro UK.
While Halle Bailey's acting and vocal performances were widely gushed by the media, Paloma Faith pointed out something else.
"I don't want my kids to think it's ok to give up your entire voice and your powers to love man," she continued. Wtf is this sh*t?! Not what I want to be teaching next gen women at all."
Per the publication, it wasn't only Paloma Faith who took issue with Disney's concept and themes. Award-winning actress Keira Knightley also expressed her thoughts on some Disney Princess movies.
In 2018, she revealed that her daughter was banned from watching "Cinderella" and "The Little Mermaid."
"She's banned from watching Cinderella, as the film is about waiting around for a rich guy to rescue her - no, rescue yourself," she told Ellen at the time. However for "The Little Mermaid," Knightley's thoughts were conflicted.
"'I mean, the songs are great, but do not give your voice up for a man. Hello! But the problem with The Little Mermaid is - I love The Little Mermaid!" she said at the time.
'The Little Mermaid' Box Office Sales
According to Billboard, "The Little Mermaid" already raked in $95.5 million in revenue in North America for its Memorial Weekend opening.
Per the publication, the studio estimates that the movie, by the time the holiday ends, would balloon to $117 million.
