As HBO Max's newest controversial series "The Idol" is about to drop, new details regarding the characters and their inspiration have been revealed.
During an interview, Lily-Rose Depp, who plays the character Jocelyn dished out on which stars she drew inspiration from.
"There was so much inspiration to be drawn, from somebody like Britney Spears, who I adore, "and all of the other incredible pop icons of our time." the model turned actress said.
According to reports, Jocelyn is a fictional superstar who is recovering from a mental health crisis; during her most vulnerable moments, she meets a cult leader who moonlights as a nightclub owner.
Even before Depp name-dropped Spears as one of her inspirations for the role, fans have already deduced the similarities between the fictional star and the "Oops I Did It Again" singer.
Something Completely New
Despite the comment, Depp insists that Jocelyn was simply inspired by the countless popstars, and no specific one was really the blueprint behind the character.
"No, it's not based on anyone in particular... We're definitely not trying to tell anyone else's story, but definitely create one of our own," the actress amended. "This is a fictional character and fictional story."
Depp also gave other examples of pop stars who she drew inspiration from, like Gene Tierney and Sharon Stone.
"I wanted Jocelyn to feel simultaneously like a modern-day pop queen of today but also like somebody that kind of existed in her own world and in her own kind of time."

'The Idol'
The upcoming HBO Max series was created under the helm of Sam Levinson, the creator of the hit series "Euphoria," and hit-maker artist The Weeknd, who also happens to play opposite Depp.
"I think the daringness of all of the scenes was something that added to the character's rawness," Depp said about the controversy surrounding the series. "Also, to my desire to go there and explore the character to the best I could."
Despite not having previous experience in film, The Weeknd's hands-on approach to "The Idol" is something that fans nor his costars can deny.
Depp sang him praises during her interview, noting that he is a "really generous partner" and that he is "really present" and "really supportive" of her.
"When you're going to these kind of like really vulnerable, emotional places with somebody, in the scenes the hope is that you'll have that kind of trust and safety with them and I really feel I had that with Abel."
