The "Surprise Songs" segment of Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour provided Saturday in Minneapolis with possibly its biggest surprise to yet as she performed "Dear John" for the first time in 11 years.
The Speak Now song is well-known for being a caustic ballad apparently written with John Mayer, a former flame, in mind.
Swift warned fans not to cyberbully a particular person following the performance and the upcoming release of Speak Now in a few days, despite the fact that she didn't specifically identify that artist by name in her lengthy introduction to the song on Saturday.
Swift suggested that "kindness and gentleness extend into our internet activities" after recognizing the kinship and fervor of her friendship bracelet-exchanging fanbase.
She explained that she no longer cares about anything that occurred to me when I was 19 years old so she is releasing this album so that you should feel compelled to defend me online against someone about whom fans believe she may have written a song about 14 billion years ago.
Swift then concluded her performance with the first "Dear John" since a concert in New Zealand in March 2012. Swift followed it up by introducing "Daylight" by Lover on tour.
Taylor's Version) and Red (Taylor's Version), both of which were released in 2021, will come after the 2010 album as her next re-recorded studio album, the singer stated in May during a Nashville performance.
Since she was unable to purchase the master recordings of her back catalog of songs in 2019, Swift has been outspoken about her plans to re-record her first six studio albums. She can obtain the masters by re-recording them. Swift, who is presently on her Eras Tour, has also been pleasantly surprising fans by performing a different song that isn't on the tour's set list at each location.
Again, the two unexpected songs played at the Minneapolis event on Saturday were "Dear John" and "Daylight."
Her first substantial tour in five years, "the Eras Tour" marks the first opportunity for the prolific musician to play songs from Lover, Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights in front of sold-out stadium crowds. Swift played one to eight songs from each of her ten full-length studio albums during the first night of the Eras Tour, which featured a career-spanning, massive 44-song setlist. Her followers will be on their toes, waiting to hear what gem will be revealed at their event, thanks to the show's nightly surprise.
