Olivia Rodrigo took over the internet last weekend as she released the lead single of her upcoming new album, "GUTS." While a new era means new sound and new inspiration, fans are doubtful of the album title, some are even questioning the album cover art.

This was because many fans saw the disconnect between "Sour" and "GUTS," which they are still about to hear on Sep. 8, 2023.

Why Did Olivia Rodrigo Named 'Guts' Her Second Album?

Speaking to Zane Lowe of Apple Music, Rodrigo revealed what the inspiration behind "GUTS" was. Apparently, Rodrigo thought of the name way before when she was making "Sour."

"I'm like, 'I want the next one to be 'Guts'.' I had it in my head. I'm like, 'Four letters, all caps, just like 'Sour.' I love it. I just think it's an interesting word. People use it in so many interesting contexts, like spill your guts," she confessed.

According to Rodrigo, the term "guts" is a "really interesting term" and could mean different things, including "bravery" and "intuition" among many others. For Rodrigo, these things were "coincidentally" the same things that she has been pondering about this new chapter that she has entered.

Many fans have dubbed "GUTS" to be "edgier" compared to the soft and tamed "Sour."

"GUTS" will be released via Geffen Records on Sep. 8, 2023. It is still not known whether Rodrigo is set to release another single before the "GUTS" album release date.

"Sour" was a huge commercial success and has easily catapulted Rodrigo to popstar status. Taking home the Grammy for Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Pop Solo Performance all in one night, Rodrigo became one of the biggest and hottest singers in the planet up until today.

Breaking The Olivia Rodrigo Image

Elsewhere in the interview, Rodrigo also touched on the topic of her "squeaky clean" image, highlighting the importance of rejecting such an idea.

"I do like to fuck shit up, but definitely that's true. I don't know. I think I listened to a lot of heavier stuff growing up and that's what I've always been drawn to," she told Lowe.

For Rodrigo, it was through her music that she gets to express her feelings of rage and talk about messing things up.

"I think in music, you have the freedom to express feelings that you don't get to express in your everyday life. And so I think maybe that's why I'm so drawn to this, because I don't get to be messy every day in daily life and work," she said.
