Taylor Swift Surpasses Barbra Streisand's Record With "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)"
Billboard released its updated Billboard 200 albums chart list dated July 22 and confirmed that Swift's new re-recorded album secured the No. 1 spot, marking the biggest week for any album this year.
According to the data released by Luminate, Swift's "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" recorded 716,000 equivalent album units in the US alone in the week ending July 13, and 507,000 of the total of 507,000 traditional album sales. The numbers led the album to become this year's biggest week for any album and her best since the release of "Midnights."
In addition, it allowed the "Lover" hitmaker to beat Streisand's previous record and became the female singer with the most No. 1 albums on the part as "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" became her 12th album to do so. She is also tied with Drake for the third-most No. 1 overall, following The Beatles and Jay-Z on the list with 19 and 14 No. 1s, respectively.
The original album, released in 2010, also debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 200 studio album that year, presenting 14 standard tracks, which were also added to the re-recorded album's 22 songs.
Taylor Swift Explains What "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" Means To Her
Before the album's release, the "You Belong With Me" hitmaker took to Instagram to share what the re-recorded album means to her over a decade since the original album was dropped.
"It's an album I wrote alone about the whims, fantasies, heartaches, dramas and tragedies I lived out as a young woman between 18 and 20," she wrote. "I remember making tracklist after tracklist, obsessing over the right way to tell the story."
She then re-recorded the album when she turned 32, and she opened up about how working on it brought her back to the past and filled her with appreciation and nostalgia. She also sent heartfelt love and gratitude to her fans who continuously support her after reclaiming her work.
