Aside from "Barbie" the movie itself, fans have been waiting for the release of "Barbie the Album" as it featured some of the biggest artists in the music industry.

Produced by Mark Ronson, the musician revealed in a recent interview that he worked on the record for over a year; find out below on how he successfully pulled it off.

According to Billboard, director Greta Gerwig teamed up with music supervisor George Drakoulis, Ronson, and Atlantic Records executives Brandon Davis and Kevin Weaver for the album and it all began with a group chat.

Weaver said the messages were popping off almost 24 hours a day and it was "quite the lively chat."

Aside from talking to each other via text on a daily basis, the group also held Zoom calls every once in a while to discuss which artists they wanted to include in the album itself.

The brainstorming for the record and the ideas came to life during their first in-person meeting when Mark Ronson, who previously worked with legendary musicians like Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga, played some themes that he already produced.

On the other hand, Gerwig presented a handful of images that began their creative process.

Ronson clarified in the interview that he didn't want the album to be "too bubble-gummy or something that would have been really obvious," that's why when they started casting artists that would contribute to the record, they told him to not write a song surrounding Barbie or Ken.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Ronson opened up that right from the beginning, they wanted to have Nicki Minaj in the album because it's impossible to produce a "Barbie" soundtrack without the rapper herself on it.

"How do you not have the person who's kept the word 'Barbie' alive in music culture the past 15 years?" he added.

However, it was not easy landing on Minaj and her duet partner Ice Spice as there were some behind-the-scenes negotiations that they have to do.

Fortunately, the two female rappers were able to collaborate and release the song "Barbie World" which sampled Aqua's "Barbie Girl."

"Barbie the Album" will be available for streaming on major music platforms starting on July 21, 2023.
