A major health scare for Iron Maiden's drummer Nicko McBrain has recently come to light.
The 71-year-old had a stroke earlier this year.
In an official statement issued through the band's social media channels, he noted that it left him "paralyzed" on one side of his body and uncertain of his future with the group.
The famous drummer confessed to feeling fearful that he would no longer be able to continue playing with the band. Their manager commended him for not wanting any fanfare and praised his remarkable recovery so far.
Nicko McBrain Statement
Nicko McBrain informed social media, especially the fans, of a difficult health issue he encountered recently.
He said that in January, he suffered from a minor stroke, otherwise known as TIA. Fortunately for him, it wasn't too severe in comparison to what it could have been.
Rebecca and the rest of his family, as well as the excellent medical care he is getting from Julie, his Occupational Therapist, and the support of the fans, have reportedly been invaluable in helping him make a nearly 70% recovery after he experienced paralysis on his right side that had left him petrified.
"Without them, my career might have ended right there."
But Nicko's hard work has paid off and after 10 weeks of therapy, he is finally ready to begin rehearsing for their upcoming tour.
Even though this news could have been shared many weeks ago, Nicko needed to prioritize his health and get back to full strength first.
As time passes, the Iron Maiden drummer revealed that things are steadily improving for him and it is "only by God's grace."
He also said that to the fans who have been a part of this journey so far, "Thank you all for a most wonderful and magical tour so far, you have all been so amazing. Well that's it from me. God bless you all, stay safe and well and I look forward to seeing you all somewhere in time."
The incredible willpower and belief displayed by Nicko McBrain since his stroke has earned him respect and admiration from not only the fans but also the rest of the band, as Rod Smallwood, their manager noted.
He stated: "We are all very proud of him. Despite having to face learning a new set that is musically complicated, he kept his focus on recovery."
The manager went on to gush that Nicko is not one to make a big deal out of things but with the assurance that he will soon reach his destination, he thought it only right that fans should hear it from him first.
"We are all of course delighted he battled through this so well and look forward to many more tours together starting with the three Western Canada shows and Power Trip in California coming up in a couple of months time. We can't wait! This tour is that good!"
