Sinead O'Connor endured the last days of her life after going through a heartbreak phase for a long time.

The Met police found the Irish singer dead at the Brixton, London, flat she had been renting. While her autopsy is still underway, the authorities released O'Connor's remains to her family to allow them to prepare for her funeral and reunite with her for the last time.

Sinead O'Connor "Barely Functioning" Months Before Death

O'Connor endured life-shattering months as her 19-year-old son, Shane Lunny, died in January 2022. Her child went missing for days before his body was recovered in the Bray area after his death by suicide.

The "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer penned in her 2021 memoir, "Rememberings," that Shane - one of her four children - was the child who "is most like me, I believe, to look at and by nature."

After Shane's death, O'Connor wished nothing but one thing: to be with her child.

A source spoke to Star Magazine (via OK! Magazine) regarding O'Connor's tragic loss and how Shane's death left her barely functioning.

"She fell into the deepest of depressions and openly admitted she was a shell of a human being with little left to live for," the insider said. "She just wanted to be with Shane."

O'Connor's final days also revolved around her late child, with her last social media posts about Shane. In her since-deleted Twitter (now X) account, the "This Is the Day" singer pened up about struggling since Shane died and living like an undead night creature.

The matriarch called him the love of her life and the only person who loved her unconditionally.

What Happened to Sinead O'Connor's Son Shane?

O'Connor worried fans in 2022 when she was hospitalized days after her son died.

She posted disturbing tweets about her decision to follow her son as there was reportedly no point living without Shane.

The 17-year-old had been on an apparent suicide watch at a hospital in Dublin. According to O'Connor, the hospital let him "out of their grasp, "leading to his untimely death.

Shane was last seen alive in the Tallaght, Dublin 24 area, before the authorities recovered a body in the Bray area, later identified as Shane's. The Gardaí ended the search following the development.
