Amy Winehouse died 12 years ago, but her legacy and memory live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and fans. In celebration of her life, her family has released her highly anticipated biography "Amy Winehouse: In Her Own Words."
The biography includes personal journal entries by the singer herself, as well as poems, doodles, and even unreleased pictures of the late star.
"It's all the things that she would write to [her mother] Janis and me," said the late singer's father, Mitch Winehouse. "We thought it would be a fitting tribute to her for the public to see her not as a superstar but as the normal, loving family girl that she truly was."
He also went on to deny the rumors that Winehouse had taken her own life, and set the record straight, calling Winehouse's death a "terrible accident."
"After she passed away, there was speculation that she committed suicide, which was nonsensical then," he continued. "[...] After five and a half weeks of total sobriety, she then went on a bender and [had] alcohol poisoning. That's what happened."
Mitch also explained how Winehouse was looking forward to the future. "She was hopeful. I don't think she was right at the point where she was going to be writing another album, but she was always working on new material.
The Life of Amy Winehouse
According to People magazine, Winehouse had cleaned up her act after years of coming in and out of rehab as well as a few "near-death experiences."
The late singer had been clean and sober in her final years, which is why her family insists that her death was accidental.
However, on her 12th death anniversary, her family prefers to celebrate her life rather than lament over her death.
"We always wanted the world to know the real Amy, where she came from and what made her tick," Mitch told the magazine about the newly released biography.
"She was a loyal, generous friend. She'd help anybody ... Just a wonderful human being who saw the best in everybody."
'Amy Winehouse: In Her Own Words'
The foreword of the biography was, of course, written by Winehouse's parents, Mitch and Janis.
"Many artists talk about waiting for the perfect song to drop into their lap from the heavens. For them, writing is a labor of love, but for Amy, songs seemed to fall easily."
The foreword also narrated how the singer would disappear into a quiet place to work on her songwriting and music, only to emerge with a finished song. When asked about her music-making process, she laughed and brushed it off, saying "Everyone can do it!"
"That was Amy - she had very little understanding of just how brilliant she was," the foreword also read.
