Ethel Cain is one of the most promising acts that has emerged in 2022. Although she hit the underground first, she is slowly creeping into the mainstream.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Cain revealed that she was blindsided into signing into Prescription Songs, which turned out to be Dr. Luke's.
Ethel Cain Signed To Prescription Records
Sharing her experience with Rolling Stone, Ethel Cain reflects on signing to Prescription Songs, a publishing label by Dr. Luke. Notably, Cain who met Lil Aaron in 2020 was introduced to the publishing label and inked a deal. Shortly after, they released her first EP, "Inbred."
"I didn't do a lot of digging until way further down the line," she confessed. "I was like, 'Oh'. I just decided, 'I'm here now and can't really go anywhere for a while. So I'm just going to mind my business and make my music.'
If Cain had a choice back then, she clarified that she would "much prefer" to sign with a different publishing label.
Infamously, Dr. Luke has been avoided by many artists after her legal spat with Kesha who accused her of rape, psychological torment, and emotional abuse in 2014. Luke has since vehemently denied the claims.
Apparently, the deal from Prescription Songs came at a low point in her life. Cain admitted that she was "broke" at the time the deal came.
"I was literally going to the hospital because I was malnourished, and I was passing out all the time. My landlord was sending me angry texts every day because I was behind on rent. I was like, 'I need money,' and I signed," she revealed.
The good thing is that Cain was in charge of all the creative process she did with Prescription Songs as Dr. Luke wasn't credited on any of her songs.
Now, Cain is exhausting what remains on her contract.
"We're almost out," she pointed out. "But yeah, if I could go back in time and do it differently, I probably wouldn't put my name on that paper."
