Throwing objects at artists has become a worrying trend in the past year. With the increasing incidents that have taken place recently, artists are forced to take safety precautions, but sometimes, you never know what is coming.
Very recently, Maluma has taken the brunt of it, albeit averted successfully.
Maluma Catches Crutches Onstage
While performing for his Don Juan World Tour in Sacramento, California, Maluma was in the middle of a performance when his instincts came in handy and he caught a crutch being thrown at him by a fan.
Like many instances in the past, fans say that it was to express their admiration for the artist. The same thing happened to Pink when she was handed a 6-pound wheel of Brie Cheese onstage.
Instead of being flustered by the thing that he caught, the Colombian star made it a light moment and decided to act like he was swinging a bat using the crutches. He also went on to play with the crutch while singing, even incorporating it into his dance moves, Entertainment Tonight reports.
At one point he ground on the crutch, which sent the whole house laughing and cheering. As he ended the act, he returned the crutch back to the audience who were thrilled to get the exclusive souvenir from the artist.
If Maluma hadn't caught the crutch on time, he might have suffered a pretty nasty blow in the face or a small injury because of how heavy the crutch is.
Fan Throwing Incidents
In the past few months, incidents like these have taken a worrying surge. Bebe Rexha got three stitches in the head after she was thrown a cell phone. Kelsea Ballerini was thrown a bracelet during a performance. Meanwhile, Ava Max was slapped by a guy who rushed to the stage.
Even huge stars like Drake, Harry Styles, and Taylor Swift could not escape these fan-throwing incidents. Country superstar Morgan Wallen was hit by a fan's boot that was thrown onstage.
According to Psychology Today, this phenomenon takes place because boundaries between fans and celebrities have continued to blur because of social media. Because fans have established a "parasocial relationship" between a fan and the celebrity, they feel like they "know" them already, hence, blurring the gap between them.
