Maren Morris formally announced she would shift genre and leave the country music industry.
Morris surprised her fans twice after the country singer released two new songs and confirmed she would no longer stay in the country music space. She spoke up about the latter in one of her new tracks, "Try That In A Small Town."
Why Maren Morris Wants to Leave Country Music
In her new interview with the Los Angeles Times, the 33-year-old "Chasing After You" singer revealed that her move is part of her desire to avoid the dramas surrounding the country music industry. She took her chance to congratulate singers like Jason Alden, whose wife Brittany has a beef with her, for "crossing over onto the big all-genre chart."
According to Morris, she thought she would like to burn the genre and start over; however, country music reportedly burned itself down without her "help."
"I've always been an asker of questions and a status quo challenger just by being a woman. So it wasn't really even a choice," the singer continued. "The further you get into the country music business, that's when you start to see the cracks. And once you see it, you can't un-see it."
The "Make You Say" crooner went on to announce she is trying to mature by walking away from things that no longer make her happy - so she decided to leave the country music community soon.
Female Country Singers "Scrutinized More" Than Male Singers
Morris explained her decision to leave by discussing further the scrutiny female country musicians like her have suffered over the past few years.
She revealed that the toxic culture arises even when the female musicians are doing well, and the experience led her to clear her head by writing songs.
Previously, the "I Could Use a Love Song" singer sparked a beef with Jason and Brittany Aldean when she slammed the latter for sharing an Instagram post thanking her parents for not changing her gender when she went through "a tomboy phase."
Meanwhile, Morris started focusing on releasing new songs, and one of the songs became the fruit of her collaboration with Jack Antonoff.
"It's like, let's write something bats--- insane today, and it might suck, but this is what I used to do when I moved to Nashville 10 years ago," she continued. "The freedom to fail, you know?"
