At the official inauguration of the Sphere on Friday night, rock superstars U2 commenced their Las Vegas residency with a concert that left spectators speechless, showcasing the largest LED screen in the world.
The Sphere, which is 336 feet tall and 516 feet wide, is said to be the world's largest spherical construction.
It features 164,000 speakers, a 160,000 wraparound LED display, and 4D capabilities. Right now, it serves as the venue for the legendary Irish rock band U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere, who are performing there for the first time of more than twenty-two shows that run through December 16.
Inside the enormous, cutting-edge spherical theater, the iconic rock band-who have won 22 Grammys-performed for two hours with crystal-clear audio.
Owing to the'mind-blowing' and 'totally amazing' visual experience provided by the venue-a massive circular structure that allows artists to display visuals behind them, all around them, and into the ceiling-fans are infatuated with it.
There were several eye-catching images throughout the evening, such as the Las Vegas skyline, a burning flag, and kaleidoscope pictures.
"What a fancy pad," exclaimed Bono, who was joined on stage by drummer Bram van den Berg, guitarists Adam Clayton and The Edge. A large number of celebrities, including Jon Hamm, Paul McCartney, Jimmy Iovine, Dr. Dre, Dakota Fanning, Connie Britton, Elizabeth Banks, Aaron Paul, Bryan Cranston, Josh Duhamel, Jane Seymour, and Kate Hudson, were among the more than 20,000 people in attendance who got a sneak peek at the highly anticipated program. The visuals are incredible as U2 opened the $2.3 billion Las Vegas Sphere last night," one person commented. 'The Sphere is totally insane,' remarked the second. 'The only concert where the nose-bleed seats are the finest,' a third person joked. "I still can't believe that thing is real," a fourth person said.
One more person said, "Concerts will never be the same."
According to CBS 8 News Now in Las Vegas, the Sphere will host concerts and spectacles at an estimated cost of $2 billion.
These events will make use of a 160,000 wraparound LED display, 164,000 speakers, and 4D capabilities that will envelop the audience in their seats. The outside of Sphere, also known as the Exosphere, is made up of over 1.2 million LED pucks spaced eight inches apart, making it the largest LED screen on Earth. Each puck has 48 separate LED LEDs in it.
There are approximately twenty-five more immersive technology presentations scheduled at the Sphere. U2 tickets are priced between $400 and $1450. For the first time, the band is playing these gigs without drummer Larry Mullen Jr., who is taking the year off to heal from a number of ailments he has sustained over the years.
Bono acknowledged Paul McCartney, who was present, after concluding The Beatles' hit song "Love Me Do," stating, "Macca is in the house tonight." He praised James Dolan, the owner of Sphere, for leading the way in developing a space that, with its 160,000 top-notch speakers and 260 million video pixels, is revolutionizing the live event audio landscape.
