The highly intimate song Piece By Piece (2015), from Kelly Clarkson's eighth album of the same name, was released roughly eight years ago.
However, she and her now-ex-husband Brandon Blackstock went through a difficult divorce after which it became difficult for her to perform the song live for her fans. In an attempt to modernize the narrative and spare herself from having to experience the pain with each performance, she decided to alter the lyrics during an appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."
"Look, I was having trouble singing [Piece by Piece], so I wasn't sure if I wanted to sing about that really."
As part of the promotion for her most recent studio album, Chemistry-which has been referred to as her "divorce" record-Clarkson, 41, made her confession to Fallon on Friday.
"When I wrote it, I was in a very different place." Clarkson has been forthright and truthful about the song's inspiration, which she previously disclosed was her connection with Blackstone at the time, as opposed to her father's absence and the way he treated her and her family during her turbulent upbringing.
In the original song, she sung, "'But piece by piece, he collected me up / Off the ground, where you abandoned things, yeah," she sang on the original song. 'Piece by piece, he filled the holes that you burned in me / At six years old and you know."

In the back half of the chorus she adds, He never walks away / He never asks for money / He takes care of me / He loves me / Piece by piece, he restored my faith / That a man can be kind and a father could stay."
Prior to her performance in Las Vegas this past August, Clarkson made the decision to alter the song's lyrics. During the Vegas concert, she sang, "I just walk away / when they ask for money / I take care of me / 'cause I love me." In essence, she changed "he" to "I" in the revised version.
Fallon mentioned that the Piece By Piece rewriting has been referred to as the "healing version" by some admirers. But what's the thing? "It is indeed true," she told the host. "I literally rewrote it an hour before I performed it live in Vegas because I knew that even though I couldn't sing the lyrics, people still wanted me to sing the song." The mother of two, who co-parents with her ex-husband, continued by acknowledging that the revisions let her see things more clearly. Additionally, it provided me with some perspective.
She told Fallon that it seems like a lot of pressure to put on someone to pick up the pieces of something from your past." "I had a lot going on that day, but it worked out in the end."
On the same interview, the "Breakaway" singer and Jimmy Fallon played a music-themed game in which they had to identify multiple songs played backwards. The singer's daytime talk program resumes the following week. But when the boy band's 1999 hit song "I Want It That Way" came on, Clarkson and Fallon were completely lost for words.
