Aside from her talent in singing, Dolly Parton is also known for her over-the-top looks, especially during the early days of her career. Although not everyone might agree with her fashion choices, she has a strong message for those who are against it.
The country legend has served countless head-turning looks throughout her career as she loved wearing massive blonde wigs and showing her cleavage on red-carpet events which were considered taboo in the past.
More recently, she spoke with Kelleigh Bannen in a four-part series titled "What Would Dolly Do?" and shared her message to those who criticize her outfits. (via Variety)
She revealed that there was one moment when Chet Atkins told her to "tone down" her fashion because the way she presented herself to the public would not be taken seriously by fans.
Bannen then asked her how she would react, to which she answered: "I'd say, 'Go to hell. I ain't doing it.'"
Dolly Parton Remains Firm With Her Fashion Choices Regardless of What Other People Think
Elsewhere in the conversation, the Dollywood owner gave a piece of advice about expressing one's self publicly, saying people should find out who they are and do what makes them happy.
"If you feel like you look your best, according to your rules, then you are going to do your best," she added. (via Taste of Country)
The "Jolene" songstress further added that the definition of fashion for her is when everybody loves their "own little things" and they're contented with it.
Dolly Parton Doesn't Regret Her Fashion Choices
The musician expressed similar sentiments in an interview with "Taste of Country Nights" where she looked back at her most outrageous looks throughout her career as a singer.
She noted that although her fashion sense was considered odd or bizarre before, she never regretted wearing them as it was one of the reasons why she was able to seal her name and identity into the world of country music.
"[No one outfit] comes to mind that I would say is a total mistake, because I have this book to let you see how funny or Godawful or whatever it was," she said.
In other updates, Dolly Parton just published her new book "Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones" which celebrates her unique identity in fashion as well as exclusive photos from her costume archive through the years.
